Watching this woman become a mother was truly inspiring. As a first time mama, her doctor scheduled her for an induction at 40+2, but following her intuition, she canceled it at the last minute and rescheduled it to 41+0, the latest he felt comfortable with her going. The 41st week came and went, and she checked into the hospital on a Monday morning for induction, working long and hard to bring her son into her arms, supported beautifully by her husband, mother, sister, and two close friends. It was just over 13 hours before he arrived, and the overwhelming joy just washed over her, the relief and excitement palpable in the room.

Moral of the story:
It's your body, your baby, your birth. It's okay to challenge your care provider when "their" (your) decisions or suggestions don't feel right to you.

One family, three entirely different worlds.

For me, this encompasses so much about the reality of motherhood and family life. I can't stop looking at it and thinking, "This image will be so valuable in 50 years." Maybe I'm feeling a bit too sentimental.

I lost both of my maternal grandparents in the last 18 months, Gran a few days before Christmas in 2016, and Gramps just 30 short days after his 80th birthday, in May of this year. As I think grief tends to, it has incited a lot of feelings, from sadness to regret, but also a deep introspection about my own life and memories.

Yesterday, I went with my Mom to their home, full of artifacts from their close-to-60 years together as man and wife, mom and dad, brother, sister, friend, and more. Along with an abundance of AA and AAA batteries, enough silverware to host 23479 people, and every hand towel and dish rag they've owned since the day they married, I found an old, tattered photo album full of the memories from their life. Some of them had been marked with dates or notes, as old as the 1930's and 40's. Some of them were formal portraits, stirring no emotional reaction for me, but the other half? Candids from their childhoods, their life as newlyweds, in the Air Force, around the holidays. Photos of them as young parents or on their honeymoon, displays of affection, hanging out with friends. A window into a life that happened long before me, some before even my mother, their first child, was a thought at all. I was mesmerized. I found the most valuable items in the entire house within those pages.

Let this serve as a reminder to you, as it was to me, to get in front of the camera. To not wait until you reach your "ideal weight," or your house is clean or perfectly decorated, or you get that haircut you're long overdue for, or you all have clean, coordinating outfits to wear. Do it now. Do it before THIS season of life passes you by like the last one. And for the love of all things, print your photos, the good, the bad, and the ugly. Print them all, so that your own grandchildren can one day discover them and your stories can teach and inspire them the way my grandparents' stories have for me.
